When World War I broke out in 1914, it took United States of America two and a half years to join the Allied Forces. Although it was considered as the Great War in terms of global scope and magnitude of devastation, U.S. opted to maintain its policy of neutrality to preserve its peace and order, and at the same time avoid dividing the nation given that the roots of its citizens have origins from European nations involved in the war (i.e., Britain and Germany).
